The Indonesian Ministry of Youth and Sports has spoken out after the controversy about the country’s futsal recruitment not being named at the 31st SEA Games.

On the afternoon of April 12, the homepage of the Indonesian Ministry of Youth and Sports said that it would consider sending the national men’s futsal team to attend the 31st SEA Games in Vietnam because of the opportunity and potential to win a medal.

However, Team Leader Moch Asmawi stressed this should be discussed with all members of the assessment team including academics, sports experts to make a final decision.

The story of the Indonesian men’s futsal team emerged after they successfully competed in the Southeast Asian Championship with the runner-up. At the same time, the media from the land of ten thousand islands simultaneously reported that Indonesian futsal did not participate in the 31st SEA Games because of little chance of winning a medal.

Chandra Bhakti, Deputy Minister of Sports Performance Improvement of the Indonesian Ministry of Youth and Sports, had to clarify: “We have looked into the case of men’s futsal, but the general secretary of the Indonesian Futsal Federation is determined to want to do so. bring the women’s team with us. So we disagree. We are firm with our choice and can bring the men’s futsal team to the SEA Games .”

Mr. Bhakti emphasized that the process of reviewing sports participating in the SEA Games was carried out professionally with the participation of many competent parties. The Indonesian Ministry of Youth and Sports only acknowledges and respects the decision of the evaluation team.

Accordingly, the Indonesian futsal team will have a great opportunity to attend the 31st SEA Games after its success in the Southeast Asian championship. However, female colleagues are not so lucky. They were not allowed to attend even though their names were in the draw and table division of the 31st SEA Games on April 6.

Indonesian media reported that the postponement of the 31st SEA Games to May 2022 caused the budget for sports to be cut, forcing Indonesia to calculate the number of sports and athletes attending the Games. Indonesia plans to send 541 athletes to Vietnam to compete, nearly 300 fewer than at the 2019 Philippine Games.
